Bush Legacy Project

Remember when Cheney said that the Iraqi's would greet us as liberators? Remember when Senator Richard Perle said in 2003 “a year from now, I’ll be very surprised if there is not some grand square in Baghdad that is named after President Bush"? Now, as W visits his disaster of a mess in Iraq for the last time, as the worst president in our nations history, he has to use his cat-like reflexes to avoid some shoes. Shoes that were thrown by an Iraqi journalist, who shouted "This is a goodbye kiss, you dog". I don't condone violence in any way (something that I wish could of been said of Bush) but this bit of extremely bad publicity was some sweet poetic justice, reminding us just how screwed up his presidency has been, and how far we've sunk in the last 8 years. A reminder which is sorely needed right now as W is attempting to rewrite his history.

I've been incensed lately at this whole "Bush Legacy Project", piloted by Karl Rove, where the President and his minions have attempted to alter recent history by twisting and altering the facts to fit their version of what happened during this disastrous administration. You know, the recent interviews with W where he "regrets" the intelligence failure in Iraq (intelligence that his own administration either invented or was extremely faulty and false "intelligence" that they knowingly announced as a fact and a threat to a frightened, scared and revengeful American public still smarting from 9/11). Bush actually wants us to think that he laments the bad intelligence, intelligence that HE KNEW WAS FALSE. He lied to us. Here's a particularly frightening transcript from W's interview with Charlie Gibson last week:

Gibson: "You've always said there's no do-overs as President. If you had one?"

Bush: "I don't know -- the biggest regret of all the presidency has to have been the intelligence failure in Iraq. A lot of people put their reputations on the line and said the weapons of mass destruction is a reason to remove Saddam Hussein. It wasn't just people in my administration; a lot of members in Congress, prior to my arrival in Washington D.C., during the debate on Iraq, a lot of leaders of nations around the world were all looking at the same intelligence. And, you know, that's not a do-over, but I wish the intelligence had been different, I guess."

Gibson: "If the intelligence had been right, would there have been an Iraq war?"

Bush: "Yes, because Saddam Hussein was unwilling to let the inspectors go in to determine whether or not the U.N. resolutions were being upheld. In other words, if he had had weapons of mass destruction, would there have been a war? Absolutely."

Gibson: "No, if you had known he didn't."

Bush: "Oh, I see what you're saying. You know, that's an interesting question. That is a do-over that I can't do. It's hard for me to speculate."

This is such b.s. He says he regrets the faulty intelligence, but then 30 seconds later he can't even say that they wouldn't of gone into Iraq if the intelligence had been correct! HE WOULD OF WENT INTO IRAQ ANYWAYS! IT WAS ALL ABOUT OIL! HE HAD A HARD-ON FOR SADAAM BECAUSE HE TRIED TO KILL HIS DADDY AND HE WAS GOING TO GET HIM AND HIS RESOURCES NO MATTER WHAT! He had to perfect opportunity after 9/11... we were scared, we were confronted with actual, physical evil, and we were completely trusting our President to protect us. And he used that tragedy to get lead us into a false war, a war in which we invaded a country that hadn't harmed one American, a war that has caused 100,000 civilian deaths, 11,000 American soldier deaths, caused us to torture prisoners for the first time in our nations history, 531 billion dollars down the drain so far, and no end in sight until 2010 at the earliest. This is is history. This is Bush's legacy. One of extreme death, destruction, evil, cowardice, lies, and all the pain and hardships that will be felt for future generations, all because of this evil little man and his BIG LIE.

And now he's trying to rewrite history! W has always had some perverse obsession with history, saying that history will redeem him while his approval ratings have reached the lowest numbers ever recorded. You see, history will judge Bush differently! Once our children see democracy spread throughout the Middle East and see the region covered in lollipops and cotton candy, they'll see how great a president Bush was! It's not his fault, it all just happened, you know? He didn't prepare for it, he didn't run for president knowing that he'd be in a war, it just happened that he was the president at that time and it fell into his lap. The economy is not his fault, the economy laws were passed long before he was in office, you see. The response to Hurricane Katrina is not his fault, the fact that we're torturing prisoners in an illegal prison is not his fault, the failure of the American economy and the start of the GREATEST DEPRESSION are not his fault, the astronomical national debt is not his fault, the depletion of our national resources and of our environment is not his fault, the war is not his fault... everything just happened to poor little old George W. Bush. HEY, AT LEAST HE WASN'T GETTING BLOW JOBS IN THE OVAL OFFICE!!

The L.A. Times obtained a White House memo detailing the Bush Legacy Project:

Titled "Speech Topper on the Bush Record", the talking points state that Bush “kept the American people safe” after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, lifted the economy after 2001 through tax cuts, curbed AIDS in Africa and maintained “the honor and the dignity of his office.”

The document presents the Bush record as an unalloyed success.

It mentions none of the episodes that detractors say have marred his presidency: the collapse of the housing market and major financial services companies, the flawed intelligence in the run-up to the Iraq war, the federal response to Hurricane Katrina or the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib.

It's fitting that Karl Rove is the guy in charge of the Bush Legacy Project. You see, altering reality is his specialty. That's actually what "Rovian politics" means... they dictate reality. They twist the facts, they leak Talking Points that they want the Faux News's and right-wing radio nuts to scream to their huddled, spineless masses. They own the facts. Whatever Rove says happened, happened. And you better believe them, because they're in charge. They're trying to keep you safe. You don't want another attack, do you ? Don't question them, don't challenge them with "facts", with "truth". They know best. They're literally trying to tell you, YOU, who lived during these last 8 years, who knows what happened, who's felt the hardships, the despair, the shame in our country... they're trying to tell you what really happened, still desperately trying to sell you on their war, on their policies, on the Republican brand itself.

But we're not going to let them dictate reality this time. I won't. We know the truth. We know what really happened. Most reality-based Americans know exactly what happened. Most of the world knows what happened. And we will let our children and future generations know what happened during this president's dark administration.

They won't win this time. History will not redeem Bush or his policies.

We won't let them.
