Golden Globes 2010 predictions

I love the Golden Globes. I'm just a sucker for movie-award shows. I legitimately care about the Oscars and stuff... lame, I know.
Anyways, the Golden Globes this year should be great because Ricky Gervais is hosting it. Ricky Gervais is a genius and insanely funny, so I really can't wait to watch him make fun of Precious this year. I'll definitely be live-tweeting the whole thing... probably.
Anyways, here are my Golden Globes predictions. I'll pick who will win, and who should win. We'll see how many I get right...

BEST MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
• Avatar (WINNER)*
• The Hurt Locker
• Inglourious Basterds
• Precious
• Up in the Air (Will Win) (Should Win)

--- I always forget to factor in the Foreign Press aspect of the Golden Globes. Some organization called the Foreign Press picks these awards, and they typically choose big, internationally popular films to win. It makes sense that they would choose "Avatar" (seeing as it's in second place in the all-time global box office and could eventually be #1 soon) over Americana like "Up in the Air" (which I still feel is the front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars). Anyways, I believe I would of predicted differently if I would of factored in the Foreign Press aspect of the Golden Globes.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
• Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria
• Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side (Will Win) (WINNER)*
• Helen Mirren, The Last Station
• Carey Mulligan, An Education (Should Win)
• Gabourey Sidibe, Precious

--- I knew Sandra Bullock was going to win this award. She'll probably win the Oscar too, although I don't think she's deserving of either. I mean, I'm sure she's fine in this heartwarming, sappy tale about the white savior (who looks like a Sarah Palin disciple) showing benevolence on the poor black people... but I'd choose the beautiful performance by Carey Mulligan over that schlock anyday...

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE, DRAMA
• Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart (Should Win) (WINNER)*
• George Clooney, Up in the Air (Will Win)
• Colin Firth, A Single Man
• Morgan Freeman, Invictus
• Tobey Maguire, Brothers

--- I should of went with my gut on Jeff Bridges here. The only thing that tipped the scale in favor of Clooney was the big-time Hollywood star factor. Not to mention his performance was great, but I figured they would award the big star to boost ratings and seem more relevant. I'm glad they made the gutsy, correct choice with Bridges. He's the Oscar favorite for sure.

BEST MOTION PICTURE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• (500) Days of Summer (Should Win)
• The Hangover (WINNER)*
• It's Complicated
• Julie & Julia
• Nine (Will Win)

--- I vastly overrated "Nine". Look, I don't think "Nine" is a good movie or even deserving of any awards, but I figured that this big-budget, star-driven musical would be the exact thing that would win big from a bloated movie awards show like the Golden Globes. I won't make the same mistake during my Oscar predictions. I also thought that "The Hangover" was way too mainstream and populist to win, but it's totally deserving of this award.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• Sandra Bullock, The Proposal
• Marion Cotillard, Nine (Should Win)
• Julia Roberts, Duplicity
• Meryl Streep, It's Complicated
• Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia (Will Win) (WINNER)*

--- Meryl Streep. Duh.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• Matt Damon, The Informant!
• Daniel Day-Lewis, Nine (Will Win)
• Robert Downey Jr., Sherlock Holmes (WINNER)*
• Joseph Gordon-Levitt, (500) Days of Summer
• Michael Stuhlbarg, A Serious Man (Should Win)

--- I can't believe that Robert Downey Jr. won here. It's really surprising... but he's really talented so maybe he's great in "Sherlock Holmes", not that I'll probably ever watch it. All I know is MICHAEL STUHLBARG WUZ ROBBED!!!!

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
• Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
• Coraline
• Fantastic Mr. Fox
• The Princess and the Frog
• Up (Will Win) (Should Win) (WINNER)*

--- Again, duh. "Fantastic Mr. Fox" was great, but this award should just be renamed the Pixar award. Nobody else stands a chance. Ever.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
• Baaria (Italy)
• Broken Embraces (Spain) (Will Win)
• The Maid (Chile)
• A Prophet (France)
• The White Ribbon (Germany) (Should Win) (WINNER)*

--- I'm glad "The White Ribbon" won. It looks incredible. I can't wait to see it. I figured "Broken Embraces" would win for the Penelope Cruz factor. I actually can't wait to see both. I need to get to the movies.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
• Penélope Cruz, Nine
• Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air
• Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
• Mo'Nique, Precious (Will Win) (Should Win) (WINNER)*
• Julianne Moore, A Single Man

--- Biggest duh of the night. Mo'Nique is a mortal lock for each and every award she's nominated for this season (it still feels really weird to type that). She's that great in "Precious". I just wish the movie would of been worthy of her incredible performance...

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE
• Matt Damon, Invictus
• Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
• Christopher Plummer, The Last Station
• Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
• Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds (Will Win) (Should Win) (WINNER)*

--- I was so glad when Christoph Waltz won. I knew he would win from the moment I caught the midnight show of "Inglourious Basterds". He was just absolutely stunning in it. I hope he wins the Oscar... his performance was just breathtaking.

BEST DIRECTOR
• Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker (Will Win) (Should Win)
• James Cameron, Avatar (WINNER)*
• Clint Eastwood, Invictus
• Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
• Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds

--- Pretty shocked by the "Avatar" love here... I figured it was just a token nomination to draw in viewers for the telecast. Don't get me wrong... it was awesome, it was fantastic and visionary and it's smashing every box office record in history. James Cameron is just an incredible dude... he has the two highest grossing movies of all time and tons of awards to comfort him at night. Just incredible.

BEST SCREENPLAY
• Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell, District 9
• Mark Boal, The Hurt Locker (Will Win)
• Nancy Meyers, It's Complicated
• Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner, Up in the Air (WINNER)*
• Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds (Should Win)

--- Glad to see "Up in the Air" get some love here. I still think it's the best film of the year. Just wish I would of picked it to win this one...

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
• Michael Giacchino, Up (Should Win) (WINNER)*
• Marvin Hamlisch, The Informant!
• James Horner, Avatar (Will Win)
• Abel Korzeniowski, A Single Man
• Karen O and Carter Burwell, Where the Wild Things Are

--- I'm glad that Michael Giacchino won... I wanted to him to win. I felt he should of won. I just chose "Avatar" here because I figured it'd be the only award they'd receive tonight and the Foreign Press didn't want to leave them empty-handed... boy, was I wrong about that.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
• "Cinema Italiano," Music & Lyrics by Maury Yeston (Nine)
• "I Want to Come Home," Music & Lyrics by Paul McCartney (Everybody's Fine)
• "I Will See You," Music by James Horner, Simon Franglen; Lyrics by James Horner, Simon Franglen and Kuk Harrell (Avatar)
• "The Weary Kind," Music & Lyrics by Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart) (Will Win) (Should Win) (WINNER)*
• "Winter," Music by U2; Lyrics by Bono (Brothers)

--- Pencil this song in for the Oscar as well.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES, DRAMA
• Big Love
• Dexter
• House
• Mad Men (Will Win) (Should Win) (WINNER)*
• True Blood

--- MAD MEN. 4 LIFE.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES, DRAMA
• Glenn Close, Damages
• January Jones, Mad Men (Will Win) (Should Win)
• Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife (WINNER)*
• Anna Paquin, True Blood
• Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

--- Whatever. Mad Men was robbed.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES, DRAMA
• Simon Baker, The Mentalist
• Michael C. Hall, Dexter (WINNER)*
• Jon Hamm, Mad Men (Will Win) (Should Win)
• Hugh Laurie, House
• Bill Paxton, Big Love

--- Whatever. Mad Men was robbed.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES, COMEDY OR MUSICAL

• Entourage
• Glee (WINNER)*
• Modern Family
• The Office

--- Whatever. 30 Rock was robbed. THESE ARE THE BEST SHOWS ON TV PEOPLE!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• Toni Collette, United States of Tara (WINNER)*
• Courteney Cox, Cougar Town
• Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
• Tina Fey, 30 Rock (Will Win) (Should Win)
• Lea Michele, Glee

--- Whatever. 30 Rock was robbed.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES, COMEDY OR MUSICAL
• Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock (Will Win) (Should Win) (WINNER)*
• Steve Carell, The Office
• David Duchovny, Californication
• Thomas Jane, Hung
• Matthew Morrison, Glee

--- Yes! 30 Rock!

BEST MINISERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

• Into the Storm
• Little Dorrit
• Taking Chance

--- Knew this one.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MINISERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
• Joan Allen, Georgia O'Keefe
• Drew Barrymore, Grey Gardens (WINNER)*
• Jessica Lange, Grey Gardens (Will Win) (Should Win)
• Anna Paquin, The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler
• Sigourney Weaver, Prayers for Bobby

--- Picked the wrong actress in "Grey Gardens".

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MINISERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
• Kevin Bacon, Taking Chance (WINNER)*
• Kenneth Branagh, Wallander: One Step Behind
• Chiewetel Ejiofor, Endgame (Will Win) (Should Win)
• Brendan Gleeson, Into the Storm
• Jeremy Irons, Georgia O'Keefe

--- I don't have any thoughts on this one. Sorry.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINISERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
• Jane Adams, Hung (Should Win)
• Rose Byrne, Damages
• Jane Lynch, Glee (Will Win)
• Janet McTeer, Into the Storm
• Chloë Sevigny, Big Love (WINNER)*

--- Whoops

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, MINISERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION
• Michael Emerson, Lost
• Neil Patrick Harris, How I Met Your Mother
• William Hurt, Damages
• John Lithgow, Dexter (Will Win) (Should Win) (WINNER)*
• Jeremy Piven, Entourage

--- Knew this one, not that I watch that show. I just heard Lithgow was great in it.

-

So in the end I finished 11/25 correct, while also picking 3 that I thought should win but I didn't think the Foreign Press would actually have the guts to pick them. All in all, a pretty mediocre night. I guarantee I'll do better on Oscar night. I'll be back...

agree with almost your whole list except with best musical or tv comedy, 30 rock sucks, the office has been much better than 30 rock this year so the office should (and will) win. Also steve carell, he's funnier and waaaaay better in acting than alec baldwing, so that one should also go to him. And I also disagree with best perfomance by an actor in a motion picture, drama. Colin Firth was stunning in 'A Single Man'. He blew my mind. Seriously, have you seen that movie? Although, I don't think he'll win... but he should.
