What is this?

This cartoon ran in today's New York Post. It shows two white cops shooting a monkey, like the one that attacked that women in Stamford, Connecticut this week. Then they compare the dead, violent monkey to President Obama. Why? Is this funny? Is this comedy? Is this racism? I'm really confused.

Sam Stein observes "At its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it. Others believe it compares the president to a rabid chimp. Either way, the incorporation of violence and (on a darker level) race into politics is bound to be controversial. "

Look, we all know that African Americans have historically been referred to as demeaned as monkeys. We all remember this guy from last year.

We've all seen these t-shirts.

We've seen this toy.

We've seen these racist historical images tying blacks to monkeys.

So why, when the first black president passes his first huge legislative bill, why would you compare him to a monkey? I mean, is this blatant racism, or is this cartoonist just so lazy that he referred to two stories in today's newspaper (the stimulus bill and the monkey attack) and tried to tie them together lazily for supposed comedic purposes?

Either way, this it totally uncalled for, New York Post.
