Singer D'Angelo was arrested and charged with soliciting a prostitute on Saturday.

Police say the R&B crooner, most famous for his naked "Untitled (How Does It Feel?)" video, was cruising in his Range Rover on Greenwich and Horatio Streets when he stopped a woman he took to be a prostitute. He then allegedly offered her $40 for oral sex.

The woman turned out to be an undercover cop and busted the singer.

D'Angelo, whose real name is Michael Archer, was also found to be carrying $12,000 in the back of his car.

I love this new Joanna Newsom album so much. I just love everything she does, and this new TRIPLE album is probably her best release yet. She's just so talented and her music is so beautiful... I really haven't listened to any new quiet, "pretty" music in a long time (via my boycott of all things acoustic and "folksy") so it's been especially nice to have a new Joanna Newsom album to mellow me out and make love to my ear drums ever-so-softly.

I've also been feeling a little depressed and nostalgic while listening to Have One On Me. Listening to Joanna Newsom always makes me think of an old girlfriend I used to have. She was my best friend and definitely the only girlfriend I've had who liked me as much as I liked her. She's probably the only (non-family) person I've ever hurt too. We used to talk all day/night about music, film, art... and she really loved Joanna Newsom.

I only think about her when something comes out that I know she'll love... I just want to talk to her about how cool it is. I used to love doing that with her. She had really great taste/insights I really respected. The last time I thought about her was when "Where The Wild Things Are" came out... I knew she'd love that.

I just wanna talk to her about how awesome this record is... I know she's probably really excited about it. Last I heard about her is that she's married (again) and drives a Benz...

Wish she'd just join Facebook so I could email her about cool music/movies like old times...

It's almost baseball season...

It's almost baseball season and I'm so excited. I seriously love baseball so much... I just feel like my life is incomplete and lacking if the Dodgers aren't playing everyday. It's by far my favorite sport, although I really love the NBA as well. It's the thinking-man's game... the game for intellectuals. A game for the anti-ADD set. A game of rich history... both within the sport and the greater social context as well. Yeah... the steroid era has permanently damaged the records (the most sacred thing in baseball) and it's pretty unfair and unbalanced without a salary cap... but I just love it so much.

Baseball is such a big, long marathon of a sport that I'm incredibly streamlined with it. I watch/listen to every Dodgers game every day I can... and that's about it. I literally only have the time/energy to follow my team. I don't even know what's going on with other teams unless it's a big, noticeable story or I happen to catch some highlights on ESPN. And I like it this way. Seriously, following the Dodgers every day for 6 months... it gives you a experience that is unparalleled in other sports. The team turns into something akin to friends or family. Honestly, I'll know more about the day-to-day activities of a Dodgers reliever over most friends/family easily.

N E Wayz... the MLB At Bat 2010 app came out today and I've been so excited for it. This app is seriously the greatest thing to ever happen to a phone. It's worth it to pay for all the extra iPhone crap just to have this app. This app let's you follow the action and listen to both home and away broadcasts of every game (perfect for a Dodgers homer like me). It even lets you watch a couple of games on your phone. It's price went up $5 this season (from $10 to $15) but I would honestly pay $50 for this app. It's really the only way I can follow the team (being without TV and LA radio) without trying to find some crappy illegal broadcast on the internet.

N E Wayz... I've been staying up all night at work thinking about the upcoming season. These are some of the burning questions I've been tossing around in my head for hours on end...

Can Manny bounce back and regain his standing as one of the greatest right-handed hitters of all time? Will he be inspired in this last big contract year to put up some impressive numbers? Or is Manny done? Will he be a big distraction with that gigantic contract hanging around the team's neck?
Can our starting pitching (the weak link last season) hold up this season? Will it be significantly weaker without Wolf? Will Kershaw and Billingsley keep progressing and "make the leap" this year? Who will be our 5th starter?
Will Padilla's leg (that he accidentally shot in the offseason) be healthy all year? Will Padilla turn into a headcase again?
Will Kemp keeping progressing and be an MVP candidate? Or will his sudden fame and relationship with freaking RHIANNA turn him into the next Darryl Strawberry/Chris Brown?
Can Ethier be the late-inning hero he was last year?
Can Loney add some much-needed pop to his bat?
Is our glaring weakness of team speed our biggest hurdle this year?
Can Martin get his average up after last year's slump?
Who will be our 2nd baseman? Will Belliard lose enough weight to keep his contract? Will Dewitt win the spot?
Can our bullpen recover from all the innings it threw last year?
Who will be our clutch bats off the bench? Can Carrol and Giles still contribute?
Will Gagne regain some of his unhittable form from a few years ago or is he just a steroid creation?
Will this be Torre's last season?
Will this be Scully's last season?
How has the McCourt divorce affected the team? Has our sudden lack of disposable income crippled this team which is right on the cusp of a championship and will impede us of gettting over the hump and winning our first championship in 22 years?
Can we ever beat the Phillies or do they own us?

H8 mnstrm "competition shows"

I really h8 mainstream network TV "competition" shows so much. I really think they're so awful and lowest-common-denominator... and they make me feel bummed/worried about the state/future of America.

"The Bachelor" is the worst. This show is the most demeaning, primitive thing on TV. It's the equivalent of when farmers bring a bull into a pen with a bunch of lady-bulls and watch the bull "hump the crap" out of all the lady-bulls all day. This show is just so pitiful... I can't believe people actually get married after meeting on this show. "The Bachelor" is why women will never be equal to men in most mainstream American eyes. "The Bachelor" reinforces domestic abuse and the objectification of women.

I really h8 crap like "The Biggest Loser". This show makes people feel better about themselves by watching a bunch of obese people struggle with their daily lives. They "root" for them to conform to society/not die from being fat, all while reinforcing their own life choices for not being a "fat loser" like the show's contestants. I just think being concerned about other people's health/weight/ obeseness is so boring. It's really not affecting you at all... if we had socialized medicine and we were actually paying for their doctor's visits or something then... yeah, I can see how you could potentially be involved in the health of others, or the "collective health". But we don't, so you shouldn't. If somebody wants to eat Mickey D's all day and have triple D's... so be it. The whole idea of "rooting for strangers to lose weight while also making me feel better about myself for not being them" is just incredibly boring/sad to me.

I h8 "Dancing With the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance" because I just don't care. These "stars" are boring. And I haven't even thought or cared if they had the capacity to dance. And dancing is boring and stupid anyways. Leave me alone with that stuff.

And of course, no diatribe about these awful, sign-of-the-apocalypse, incredibly successful mainstream network TV "competition" shows would be complete without "American Idol". This show gives mainstream Americans the "power" to make or break the lives of strangers. It makes people feel "important", feel "meaningful", feel "entertained". We're like the Roman emperors at the Coliseum, giving a "thumbs up or down" about the strangers who are here to mildly, innocently entertain us with their jazzy renditions of popular songs I h8. This somehow makes mainstream Americans feel "important", feel "part of something bigger" than their mundane lives. Not to mention the first couple episodes are practically making fun of all the handicapped/mentally challenged people that sing for the judges/America's derision.

N E Wayz... these shows really bum me out to no end. They make me feel alone/scared for the future.

Just wish every show was like 30 Rock/Curb Your Enthusiasm/Mad Men/Freaks and Geeks/The Wire/The Office/The Sopranos/Dr. Katz/Friday Night Lights/Doug/Pete and Pete/Speed Racer/The State/Mr. Show.

Mr. Ed

I watched an episode of Mr. Ed at work tonight.
It was the weirdest TV show I've ever seen... but I really enjoyed it. I was like legitimately "ell oh elling", and my co-workers probably thought I was really weird.
I was fascinated by Mr. Ed's "talking". I was intrigued as to why the horse lived in the house and only "spoke" to Wilbur.
The episode was about "teenagers". I love how "teenagers" was a new thing in the 50's. A new group of consumers to be "tapped" by corporations. It was a simpler time... now all the tweens do is sext each other.
N E Wayz... watching Mr. Ed tonight made me long to have TV again. I've seriously only had a TV with basic cable for probably 18 months of the past 5 years or so... and while I h8 most TV and don't really watch it when I did have it, it's really good for watching random episodes of stuff like Mr. Ed. When I move soon I'm gonna get my TV hooked up. Just you wait and see.

I had a dream...

I had a dream last night.
I was in a private luxury box at the Staples Center, watching a Lakers game with some friends from Portland.
I saw Larry David sitting in the front row with some friends, practically right on the bench with the Lakers
(he did this in a Curb episode so it probably stemmed from there).
I was so excited to see Larry David. He's my hero.
I was really bummed that none of my friends even knew who he was or had seen Curb Your Enthusiasm. I just said "he created Seinfeld" and quietly judged my friends for being so lame.
After the first quarter of the game, I saw Larry David, now dressed in doctor's scrubs, get up from his seat, walk across the court, and come up the stairs on my side of the stadium.
Cameras were following him, and I assumed they were filming him for a future episode of Curb.
I quickly ran out of my luxury box to catch LD. I just wanted to see him and take a picture of him. He is my hero.
I sprinted right by LD and he saw me and I became really embarrassed that he saw me running. I no longer wanted to take his picture and I didn't want to bother him. I was worried that he thought I was weird for running around the Staples Center to find him.
Then I woke up.
I couldn't go back to sleep after that because I was too excited about seeing LD.

Vegas Upset Over Obama's Double Put-Down

So everybody in Las Vegas is all pissed off because President Obama mentioned that it's probably not a good idea to go blow all your money in Las Vegas if you can't pay your mortgage or bills during this economic recession. Which is so ridiculous.

First of all... he's right. You shouldn't go to Las Vegas and blow all your money if you can't pay your mortgage, your bills, ect. Duh. We're in a recession. If you're responsible and have everything taken care of and paid for, by all means, go lose all your money in Las Vegas. If not, don't. It's called being a grownup. It's called speaking to the American people like they're grownups. Which was something that the American people originally admired about President Obama. Unless he's referring to them. In which case... how dare he??

Second of all... as if people really listen and do whatever the president advises them to do. As if some degenerate gambler isn't going to lose all his money in Las Vegas because some elected official in Washington D.C. reminded them that they probably should save/invest their money instead of gamble it away. Las Vegas should probably stop blaming the president's "tough talk" of frugality in these economic hard times for all their problems. Instead of, you know, the actual recession that has taken many otherwise-responsible Americans discretionary income.

Lastly, and most importantly... he's only using Las Vegas as an example in a speech. He's not asking people to boycott Las Vegas and for the city to be shut down. He's not physically going to Las Vegas and barricading the doors to the Caesar's Palace, imploring tourists to turn away. He's simply using it as an effective example of something that might not be prudent if you can't pay your bills. His exact quote was:

"You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college. You prioritize. You make tough choices."

Sorry... what's wrong about this statement again?

I do feel bad for Las Vegans. I have a ton of friends down there, duh. I want them to be successful and have jobs and stuff. And Las Vegas definitely serves a purpose. It is a "fun" place. There is a lot of "neat" stuff there. And I worked in the tourist industry when I lived there so I know how it is and I know how people have been struggling the past couple of years. But maybe blame the actual global recession instead of an example used in a speech by an American president that nobody listens to anyways.

Gosh... Las Vegas is the worst. It's not only a cultural wasteland but pretty soon it'll be just a wasteland-wasteland. The whole town is entirely incapable of weathering any storm... both economically and environmentally. I honestly don't even think people will be living in Las Vegas in 20 years... Once clean, cheap water becomes more scarce do you really think we're going to waste it on some "party" town in the middle of the desert?

Glad I got out of there when I did... I really like it here in Portland. Love everybody there though!

Large Portion Of GOP Thinks Obama Is Racist, Socialist, Non-U.S. Citizen: Poll

Some of the polls findings:

- 39 percent of Republicans believe Obama should be impeached, 29 percent are not sure, 32 percent said he should not be voted out of office.
- 36 percent of Republicans believe Obama was not born in the United States, 22 percent are not sure, 42 percent think he is a natural citizen.
- 31 percent of Republicans believe Obama is a "Racist who hates White people" -- the description once adopted by Fox News's Glenn Beck. 33 percent were not sure, and 36 percent said he was not a racist.
- 63 percent of Republicans think Obama is a socialist, 16 percent are not sure, 21 percent say he is not
- 24 percent of Republicans believe Obama wants "the terrorists to win," 33 percent aren't sure, 43 percent said he did not want the terrorist to win.
- 21 percent of Republicans believe ACORN stole the 2008 election, 55 percent are not sure, 24 percent said the community organizing group did not steal the election.
- 23 percent of Republicans believe that their state should secede from the United States, 19 percent aren't sure, 58 percent said no.
- 53 percent of Republicans said they believe Sarah Palin is more qualified to be president than Obama.

Can't we just have a nice, calm, civil Civil War with these people? Can't we just throw in the towel and go our separate ways? I'm sick of fighting with these people. They can't be reasoned with because they're not reasonable. Let's split this country up, 50-50. We can make it a soft border so it'll be easy to cross over to the other country and visit family and stuff (although they CANNOT come over to take advantage of our free health care). I just don't want to spend the rest of my life being weighed down and held back politically by these otherwise fine people.

My favorite author, JD Salinger, died Wednesday. His work, especially "Catcher in the Rye" (my favorite novel), has had a profound impact on my life. Of all the art (music, film, literature, paintings) I love and adore, I felt that my connection to Salinger and his work was the strongest and most profound artistic relationship I have. I truly felt like he understood me and knew what I felt, more so than anybody on this planet.

I am aware of the total cliche it is to say "I am Holden Caulfield" but I can't deny it's power and truthfulness: I AM Holden Caulfield. And I'm not the only one... there are millions of Holdens all over the world who share his worldview... his passions and feelings. I was shocked... absolutely amazed... the first time I read "Catcher in the Rye". I read it in one day... in one sitting. I couldn't stop to eat, to breath. The novel made me feel like I wasn't alone, that I wasn't the only one who had these same feelings about society, about the "phonies" amongst us and our responsibility to protect the young and innocent against them. I read the novel every year now, learning new things about myself each time.

I love all of Salinger's work. I love his Glass family... I love "Franny and Zooey". I love his short stories... especially "A Perfect Day for Bananafish". I still remember the exact time, place... EVERYTHING the first time I read "Bananafish" and being absolutely floored. Feeling that my life had been somehow altered forever by this potent, explosive short story. Seymour Glass... what more can you say?

And it is this love of Salinger's work that leaves me almost somewhat happy and relieved of his death, as awful it might be to express that. We all know that Salinger was infamous as a hermit, a recluse. I've read a couple of books about him, one written by his dauther, the other written by his girlfriend, about his reclusive, bizarre behavior. His last work was published in 1965, but, by all accounts, Salinger kept writing daily during the last 50 years. He kept his work, which is rumored to possibly be as much as 15 novels, in a safe at his home in New Hampshire. His daughter said that he had specific instructions on the publication of this work after his death. So, although it is sad to see a legend go, we will finally get to see what he's been working on this whole time and have more opportunities to devour and appreciate more works by this brilliant, brilliant author.

We'll love and miss you JD. Thank you for your incredible work, and for the work that we will be discovering in the near future. Thank you for "Catcher in the Rye", a book that has meant so much to the 60 million who, upon purchasing and reading it, no longer felt completely alone in this messed-up, confusing world. It is because of you that I feel ok with who I am and what I believe in. I won't give in, JD. I won't be a boring adult, a phony. I will take your place on that cliff in the rye field, making sure the kids don't accidentally fall off. And I'll find out where those ducks go during the winter.

Hope you caught up with Phoebe on that carousel, JD. Save a spot for me.

Voodoo: 10 Years On

On this day, 10 years ago, an album was released that has helped shape and define my life, for better or worse, than any other before or since: D'Angelo's Voodoo. This album was the tipping point in my life, not only in how I consumed or listened to music but also in my political and personal life as well. My life can easily be divided in pre-Voodoo and post-Voodoo. I believe that once you go Voodoo you can never go back. I'm actually jealous of Voodoo virgins who have yet to discover and love the album. I wish I could recapture those feelings I had while listening to the album for the first time 10 years ago. In essence, I've been chasing that feeling ever since.

The 17 year-old who picked up Voodoo 10 years ago was very different than the person I am today. I had always been schooled by my Dad's classic rock and Nirvana records, and I had been listening to a lot of hip-hop for a couple years, but my musical/personal growth was still pretty stunted. I didn't have an older brother or sister to show me cool records, and all my friends' older siblings listened to crap like Sublime and the Bloodhound Gang. I was heavily preoccupied with being macho and "manly". I remember even feeling uncomfortable listening to overly sensitive songs and songs sung by women, something which I'm terribly embarrassed by now. Maybe it was because of the whole Lillith-Fair thing, but I distinctly remember not buying records with female singers for a long time. Which is weird, because now I prefer listening to girl-bands and girl singers.

Anyways, Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was the breaking point; she had hip-hop cred because of The Fugees and me and my friends had all gotten her album when it came out in 1998. It was such a great record; still one of my top-10 favorites to this day. Half of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was "hip-hop music", but the other half were these incredible, soulful, sad, longing r&b songs sung in Lauryn's beautiful voice. I was surprised by how much I liked these songs. I wasn't embarrassed to listen to them... in fact, I preferred them over the other "rap" songs I was expecting on the album. One of these incredible soul songs was a duet Lauryn sang with somebody named D'Angelo, called "Nothing Even Matters". I was hooked.

The next time I saw or heard from D'Angelo was a year later; I caught his iconic, controversial video for "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" on MTV. Needless to say... my mind was blown. And has never recovered. YOU know which video I'm talking about...

D'Angelo - New Music - More Music Videos

I couldn't believe how much I dug this slow jam sung by a naked black dude. And believe me... this was a very different thing for me. It's not very "macho" to be sexily serenaded by a naked man. But I just couldn't stop listening to this song. I felt like I had discovered this whole new world, this whole new music that would take me places I had never been before. Based on this song alone, I went to the Tower Records on January 25th, 2000 and bought Voodoo (and D'Angelo's first album, Brown Sugar, which is a classic also). I remember even being ashamed and embarrassed that I was buying an album with a shirtless guy on the front... I was sure the cashier was going to make fun of me. I was really stupid back then, alright?

Anyways, needless to say, Voodoo was unlike anything I had ever heard and completely changed my life. This album spurred on my love for black music, for black culture, for black history, for black politics, for minority politics as a whole and eventually my lifelong affinity for liberal politics and beliefs today. This album opened me up to listening to different types of music and embracing different types of thought. I no longer was preoccupied with fitting in or trying to fulfill the role and stereotype that I believed I had to squeeze into. Because of Voodoo I discovered Prince, David Bowie, The Velvet Underground, The Smiths, and other bands and artists who broke through genres and boundaries and pushed the envelope on both gender and musical lines.

Voodoo just feels so organic to me. It feels like a living, breathing thing. It is beyond funky and soulful; the rhythm teeters back and forth, the bass wobbles around the beat, the drums never exactly match up with the rest of the instruments (all things which were done on purpose). The record is just endlessly exciting and challenging. It is an almost-perfect record... except for "Left and Right".

"Left and Right" is probably the most frustrating track for me by any artist on any album. Not that it's even a bad song... it just doesn't fit on Voodoo AT ALL and actually detracts from the overall feeling and mood of the record. It really sticks out like a sore thumb. I have to skip the song EVERY TIME I listen to the record (which is often), making it frustratingly incomplete as a true "masterpiece". The thing is, Voodoo is a true "timeless" record. You could play this to people now and they probably wouldn't be able to tell you what decade it came out; I could imagine guesses ranging anywhere from the 60's to today. Voodoo could be the lost Prince record, the lost Marvin Gaye or Al Green album. Except for "Left and Right" TOTALLY dates the album to the turn of the millennium. "Left and Right" is the only song on Voodoo featuring rappers (Method Man and Redman), who rap pretty horribly and misogynistically throughout the song. "Left and Right" was the first single released, and I believe that D'Angelo's record label pressured him into using two big-name rappers to build up some buzz on urban radio for the album. It is so jarring to listen to Voodoo, totally vibing out, and then hear Method Man and Redman trade verses about their ballsacks or whatever. It's just such a shame that this song is on the album. However, this problem was recently fixed by me when I tracked down the "Left and Right" single a couple of years ago. The single features a superior B-side version of "Left and Right" without the rappers, and it is now the version I listen to while blasting Voodoo (on the regular).

A lot has changed for D'Angelo since Voodoo came out. He got fat, got addicted to crack, got arrested, spent time in jail, and has been supposedly "working" in the studio during the last 10 years making his follow-up to Voodoo. Those who have been "working" on these sessions claim that the music is next-level genius stuff that will blow all of our minds when it's released. We'll see...

Voodoo has not been forgotten or sullied with time though. This album is legitimately gaining traction as a classic "masterpiece" of neo-soul, of r&b, or of just plain soul music. It truly stands up to any Prince, Marvin, Al or Sam Cooke record, a true classic of it's genre. It has a Wikipedia page that is a mile long and incredible detailed. It ranked # 488 on Rolling Stone's "Greatest Albums of All-Time" list. It ranked #23 on Rolling Stone's "Greatest Albums of the 2000's" list. It ranked #44 on Pitchfork's "Top 200 Albums of the Decade" list. That doucher John Mayer wrote a great essay about Voodoo for Esquire. Heck, even Questlove said TODAY on Twitter that Voodoo is the greatest thing he's ever worked on (check the exclusive D'Angelo material he recently posted here).

Anyways, these were some of my random thoughts on Voodoo. Can't believe it's been 10 years since this album came out. I wonder how different I'd be if I had never heard it... I wonder if I would keep chasing that music high and care so much about the arts and taste and personal brands and liberal politics and culture-snobbery if I didn't have my mind blown by this funky, dirty, funky, funky album as a teenager... So maybe, in the end, Voodoo was the gift and the curse. Ya digggg?

Real talk, Martin Luther King is a hero of mine. MLK and Jackie Robinson have always been 1-2 in my book. I just think he's endlessly fascinating and probably the most important/heroic person in the history of our country.

That being said... I guess we all celebrate MLK Day in different ways. Some people remember and practice Dr. King's message of peace and tolerance, a timeless message that is still desperately needed here in the 21st Century. Other people make a bizarre video of an auto-tuned MLK giving his "I Have A Dream" speech behind a Manny Fresh-esque beat. Different strokes for different folks.

This "tribute" is probably the weirdest thing on the internet.

I love the Golden Globes. I'm just a sucker for movie-award shows. I legitimately care about the Oscars and stuff... lame, I know.
Anyways, the Golden Globes this year should be great because Ricky Gervais is hosting it. Ricky Gervais is a genius and insanely funny, so I really can't wait to watch him make fun of Precious this year. I'll definitely be live-tweeting the whole thing... probably.

He's the Oscar favorite for sure.

Favorite song ever from my favorite band. Wish I could of seen them live... sigh.

I just found this incredible, UK-only import , 12-CD box set of Smiths singles. I've seen it online for like over a hundred bucks but I got it for $40 at a record store in Las Vegas! Needless to say I was incredibly excited over this rare find. As a Smiths completist (I have tons of bootlegs and live albums) I had to have it.

The coolest thing is that they only made 10,000 of these box sets, making them extremely rare. I got # 5,847. See?

I've been so upset over this whole Conan/Leno fiasco. It's just so unfair and wrong... Conan is such a classy guy, he's put in 17 years of hard work to get to this opportunity, he pushes his comedy and his medium forward instead of playing it and safe and stagnant and he finally got his dream job 7 months ago. He is young, hip, and funny, with a loyal, young audience who would of grown with him for a generation.
And now he's getting kicked to the curb by the worst, most mediocre piece of crap... Jay Leno. A guy who had the job for almost two decades, didn't do anything important or meaningful with it, has more money than he could possible spend and cares more about his car collection than his "artform". A guy who knew this day was coming 5 YEARS AGO and had to weasel his way into doing his crap show for old middle-Americans at 10 pm but then sucked so bad that NBC was "forced" to give him back his old position to appease the local affiliates... all while pushing Conan around like a red-headed stepchild (pun intended). This just isn't fair.

I just feel so bad for Conan in all of this. Seriously, I've gotten a little teary-eyed reading his statement and watching his monologues on TV this week... I know, it's cheesy but it's true. He is a good, hard-working guy who really pushes himself, his staff and his crew to create meaningful, funny material. His life goal was to do the Tonight Show... he moved his family and his staff out to L.A. only to be pushed out 7 months later. He has handled this whole thing with class. Here's his statement he posted the other day:

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Just watch this video from his monologue last night... you just can't help but feel bad for him, but also admire him for the strength and public restraint he is showing through all of this. If you can't tell already, I really admire the guy. Check the Kenneth the Page cameo too!:

And Leno... Leno, Leno Leno. Always hated the guy. He pulled this same crap with David Letterman (the proto-Conan) 20 years ago. He is painfully unfunny. Painfully mediocre. He is a complete egomaniac, a man who feels self-worth and validation by shaking hands and "conversing" with Will Smith and Tom Cruise when they're out promoting their movies. He is a giant douche with a giant chin. I wish he'd just get in a car accident in one of his beloved automobiles. He is everything that is wrong with giant corporations, with the media... with America in general. And it REALLY INFURIATES me that he's trying to play the victim in all of this. If he had AN OUNCE of class he would realize he's had a good run, realize his time was up, realize he agreed to leave the Tonight Show five years ago and he would step down. He would retire to his car collection and his crappy stand-up shows to wealthy yuppies in Las Vegas. HE'S THE WORST.
I love how other comedians are jumping on Leno... I could see this turning into a MAJOR backlash against him and NBC in general, one that could last a generation. Jimmy Kimmel did a whole show dressed up as Leno, making fun of him the whole time. :

I know it seems silly to get upset about this. It's just a couple millionaires fighting over a television show after all. Conan will probably leave NBC and start his own show on Fox or something. But I think it means more than that. It's about right and wrong. It's about not letting the bad guys, the bullies, the mediocre win. It's about loyalty and honor. And it's about the good, hard-working, talented people getting to accomplish their dreams and succeed in life. Isn't that what we're taught and socialized to believe in when we were children? That a form of meritocracy still exists in America?
Conan said it best in his monologue tonight:

"And I just want to say to the kids out there watching: You can do anything you want in life... unless Jay Leno wants to do it, too."

NBC needs to make this right before it's too late and they lose a whole generation of comedy fans...
(wish they didn't have 30 Rock, The Office and Friday Night Lights so I could boycott them completely)

I didn't really get to follow a lot music this year. I was pretty broke all year and it's hard to follow music when you ain't got no paper. But I've been slowly but surely going back and getting a bunch of new albums that I couldn't afford earlier this year. I also wasn't really inspired by much music this year. I just found a lot of it boring and tired. I'm so sick of bearded acoustic flannel-folk. I'm waiting for something exciting/dangerous to come out and rock my socks off. There really wasn't anything life-altering or incredibly exciting this year. It was just mostly... aight.
Maybe 2k10 will be a "comeback year". Looking forward to new releases by Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and (hopefully) D'Angelo and Kanye West. N E Wayz... peep my list. And haters to the left.

I was disappointed in a lot of albums this year... especially the new Clipse and Jay-Z albums. But the most disappointing album this year was the new Bob Dylan album called "Together Through Life". It's not awful or anything... it's just boring and tired and a little uninspiring.
As an avid Dylan fan, I've been amazed at how great he has been the last 12 years. Seriously, Dylan's last three albums, "Time Out of Mind", "Love and Theft" and "Modern Times" are seriously amazing and historic. There has never been quite an artistic and relevant comeback in rock & roll history. Seriously, Dylan was pretty mediocre for 20 years before his artistic renaissance in 1997 with the beautiful "Time Out of Mind". Nobody else has ever done that... legends like McCartney, Prince and Robert Plant release albums every year but they will never approach their earlier work. Dylan's last 3 records rival anything he's ever done in the 60's and 70's. And it was a shame (although inevitable) that this artistic renaissance had to come to a halt eventually... and it happened with "Together Through Life". I'm not saying he won't recapture the magic on his next album, but it's kinda hard to find it after you lose it. And he lost it on "Together Through Life". Again, it's not awful. It's actually pretty good. But it's not great. It's definitely a step back after his previous three classics. And that's disappointing to me.

My least favorite movie of 2009 was Precious. I heard it was great, I was really excited to see it, I even cried a couple times in the theater... and I hated it. I hated it when I left the theater, and, the more I've thought about it in the 2 months since I've seen it... I absolutely hate it even more.
Now, don't get me wrong, it's not ALL awful. The performances were great. I would be shocked if Mo-Nique doesn't win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (it feels so weird typing that). She was great. I really didn't even know that she was Mo'Nique (probably a good thing) but she was scary-good and scary-scary.
However, this movie was incredibly, almost pornographically-sad and depressing... there is incest, rape, abuse, AIDS, handicapped daughters/sister, and all sorts of incredibly messed-up and ugly stuff that occasionally happens in this horrible world we live in. But the pain and ugliness is unrelenting and without hope... nothing improves, nothing gets better, everything is awful and Precious is hardly in a better situation by the end of the film.
There are also a ton of technical things wrong with this movie. The fantasy scenes are incredibly cheesy and cheap... and they totally take you out of the flow of the movie. The story is just as cheesy... there is even a deus ex machina character called BLU RAIN. N E Wayz, I just really hated this movie. I think it's racist and plays into racial stereotypes and ghetto-ness. This movie doesn't help the "cause" in any way. But what do you expect from a Tyler Perry-produced movie? BLAHH.

It's just basically Jigga and Yeezy passing the mic back and forth on some playground ish over a grimy beat. It reminds me of a futuristic"Brooklyn's Finest" with Kanye taking Biggie's spot. I have to admit that my excitement for the Blueprint 3 has been tempered a little bit. As a self-professed Jay-Z scholar, you can pretty much tell how good a Jay-Z album is going to be by how many guest stars are on it. The formula works like this: the less guest stars on the album, the better the album will be. This has proven true time and time again. Jay-Z's classic albums feature little-to-no guest stars. Think about it... Reasonable Doubt (just Biggie, Memphis Bleek and Foxy Brown), The Blueprint (just Eminem), The Black Album (none) and American Gangster (just Lil Wayne, Beanie Segal and Nas)... these were his best albums because they showcased a hungry, inspired Jay-Z who had so much to say that he didn't even mess with padding his album with guest spots. Seriously, on The Blueprint, Jay-Z is practically talking over the WHOLE ALBUM, even the instrumental interludes... that's how inspired he was on that classic. When Jay isn't really feeling his creative direction and his confidence wanes is when he leans heavily on guest verses, to his albums detriment. I mean, dude is the best rapper alive... he doesn't need anybody else to shine.

But look how many guest stars are on the Blueprint 3! There's like 4 songs without some big guest star on it... which is a really bad sign for the quality of his album. I hate to say it, but the formula is correct. Also, the Blueprint 3 has been pushed back all year... the thing was supposed to come out last Christmas. That is another bad sign about Jay-Z's creative process... usually he pushes album release dates UP because he records his classics in a crazy-inspired two week marathon sesh. By pushing his album back 9 months and by leaning heavily on an all-star collection of guests suggests that the Blueprint 3 might have more in common with the mediocre Blueprint 2 than the best-hip-hop-album-of-all-time Blueprint.

I hope I'm wrong, but, as a certified Jay-Z historian, the formula hasn't failed yet. It's still going to be great... this is Jay-Z we're talking about after all. The guy cannot make a bad album (except for his AWFUL In My Lifetime Volume 1). Let's just hope that Jay breaks the formula on this one.

Here's the trailer for the new Wes Anderson stop-motion animation movie, The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Featuring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, and Jason Schwartzman! It looks really great. You could really tell it is a Wes Anderson movie (especially with his mainstays of Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman). I really hope this movie is great and that Wes Anderson has found his artistic mojo again... he's been lacking in inspiration for awhile now.

So Letterman (a hero of mine) recites a joke written for him by some lowly comedy writer who mixed up the Palin daughters, resulting in him unknowingly making a sex joke about a 14 year-old at a Yankees game instead of her single-mother older sister. Sarah Palin, a sad, desperate politician, feigns outrage and accuses Letterman of pedophilia and practically blames him for ever rape and sexual abuse in the country. And Palin does this while she drags her 14 year-old into this in the first place; nobody knew (or cared) which daughter went with her to New York anyways. So Letterman (a COMEDIAN) apologizes twice on air for his lazy joke. End of story right? The desperate, reactionary conservative media drums up some phony outrage about how Letterman should be fired, which results in this sad "protest" which had more media people covering this "controversy" than there were protesters.

I'm ready for the second Civil War. Let's just get it over with. I don't want to live with these people anymore. We're always threatening to leave the country when our side loses anyways, we might as well just divide it up and try to live some semblance of happiness. The idea of America has failed. Democracy has failed as an experiment. We're just torturing ourselves by continuing to inhabit the same country as these people.

I was so excited about America after President Obama won the election, but I keep getting dragged down by these sad people. These people are holding us back as a nation. These people are the reason why nothing ever gets done in this country, why nothing ever gets better.

This isn't just a song. This is an anthem, a statement, a public service announcement, a state of the union address from the greatest rapper alive about the current sorry state of hip-hop. I really feel like this track is a game-changer, one that will be felt in every corner of hip-hop. Everybody is so sick and tired of this autotune ish, but we needed Jay to come out and kill it once and for all. This is basically "The Takeover" for all of commercial hip-hop.
